The Nance

Post by Dan » June 11th, 2014, 10:47 pm

In a couple of weeks, there will be a limited theatrical run of a recording of The Nance, a hit Broadway show starring Nathan Lane that earned him a Drama Desk Award. Be warned, though, that this is a show likely intended for mature audiences as it deals heavily with homosexuality in 1930s New York (seems the MPAA will rate it PG-13).

Lane plays Chauncey Miles, a performer in a burlesque theatre company where he is a "nance", a "stock character who was a flamingly effeminate homosexual". Miles is gay off stage as he is on stage, but must be careful as being such in public will get him arrested.

Saw a preview for this in the theatre the other day. It looked like a role written just for him!

Also saw a preview for a recent theatrical run of the stage version Driving Miss Daisy with Angela Lansbury and James Earl Jones. Was tempted by that one but $20 tickets for a recording of a stage show seemed a little steep.
