Why is it that anytime anyone puts together an animation related list, said list is always dominated by disney/pixar? They've both done great work, but there is so much more out there that never gets a spotlight. For example:

1. The Giant (The Iron Giant)
2. Jeremy H. Boob (Yellow Submarine)
3. Tiger (An American Tale and Fievel Goes West)
4. Mayor Ned (Horton Hears A Who)
5. Wallace and Gromit (Curse of the Wererabbit)
6. Jimmy Neutron (Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius)
7. Bartok (Anastasia)
8. Po (Kung Fu Panda)
9. Cartman (South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut)
10. Beavis and Butthead (Beavis and Butthead Do America)
11. Totoro (My Neighbor Totoro)
12. Lupin III (The Castle of Cagliostro)
13. Pikachu (Pokemon film series)
14. The Joker (Batman: Mask of the Phantasm)
15. Asterix and Obelix (Asterix film series)

Any one of those characters deserves a place on that list IMO and it's not fair for one company to hog all the glory like disney does. This only shows how little Moviefone knows about the field.

i would'nt take this personally, i know there are lots of characters for this list both disney and otherwise, however i think they need to be more specific about the category.
i mean, cheshire cat more important than alice herself? or the mad hatter or the rabbit? its a bit crazy, and i think simba, or scar, or even mufasa has an impact on children and prolong the watchability of the lion king more than timon and pumbaa do,
i just found the list a little confusing, is it secondary characters? no cos woody and buzz are on it, is it just main characters, well no, cheshire cat etc,
i think that the 'animation' category is too wide and varied for any inisghtful list to be created free from personal bias:) we need to be more specific!! lol!
oh and to the last poster, disney and pixar arent the 'mcdonalds' of the animaton world, just because something is popular doesnt make it any less worthwhile. the masses in america will miss my neighbour totoro, and other notable worthwhile animated films that arent from disney, it doesnt mean that is disney's fault, its just the way of the world. your post comes off cynical and anti- disney.
don't hate the players (disney/pixar), hate the game!(advertising and films needing to make a 'profit')

I'm a huge fan of both disney and pixar. My point is that there's a lot more to animation than just those two companies and almost nothing else gets press most of the time and I don't think that's right. For my part, I've tried to expose my niece (who's eight) to as wide a variety of stuff as possible from "Kiki's Delivery Service" to "Once Upon A Forest" to "The Chipmunk Adventure". I think kids today really need that exposure but not enough of them get it (although I did talk to a parent the other day whose kids really like the original Birdman show. I suggested they give Space Ghost a try). Unless more of the non-disney stuff gets recognized for its quality, it's all going to be forgotten and how sad would that be?

Wilbur gets chosen over Paul Lynde's Templeton?? 0_0
Mike instead of Sully?
Nemo the wimpy-generic kid, and not his neurotic dad?
Does no one remember Jack Skellington??

(And our batallion of derangedly loyal NIMH fanboys offer not a word for Jeremy Crow??)

I agree with eddievalient. This list actually could be by someone who knows nothing beyond Disney-Pixar.

Not even Homer Simpson. I would've expected him.

I think the biggest over-sight on this list is definitely Bugs Bunny.

Probably because it's features-only.
(Which Bugs might technically qualify for with "Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie", except that we get the lame, fey-talky post-retirement-Chuck version.)

(looks at list again)
And...wait, did they put "Carl Fredericksen" up there, or did they get Dug's name mixed up?

Why are lists like these also always about characters/films from the past 20 years or so (obvious exceptions aside).

And as well as not getting the date right, they can't spell Dalmatians...! ;)

It does seem to be a little Disney/Pixar heavy. I don't mind the supporting characters. Some of them are the best things about their perspective movies. As for age, if I had to compile some of my favorites it would also include a lot of characters from the past 20 years if only because of my age. I'd have to think about my top 25. I'll work on it and post.

15. Pikachu
16. Gumby
17. Betty Boop
18. Top Cat
19. Mickey Mouse

24. Josie and the Pussycats
25. Heckle and Jeckle
26. Arthur
27. Winnie the Pooh
28. Felix the Cat
29. Mr. Magoo
30. George of the Jungle
31. Ren and Stimpy
32. Tom Terrific
33. Tweety and Sylvester
34. Bill
35. Space Ghost

Top 25 Animated Film Characters

Post by Dusterian » July 29th, 2009, 5:10 pm

To me, it was very, very clearly about animated films only. The title just didn't say what they were really doing, which was only talking about animated films. Even if Bugs was in one feature, that would have to be some feature to show Bugs as the great character we know from the shorts. I haven't seen the movie and yet I'm pretty sure it didn't do that.

It definately was too Disney/Pixar heavy, and I couldn't believe they chose certain secondary characters over leads. Often it was kind of like the cute or funny characters over the powerful, dramatic ones that gave us more emotion and that we pull for. Except the likes of Wilbur and Buzz and Woody and other exceptions.

Yea what gives Nemo over Marlin or Dory wtf?!

I completely agree with you on this one Dusterian. Many of those are great supporting characters and are certainly memorable. However, while Finding Nemo may be one of my favorite Pixar films, Nemo is by far not my favorite character. Dori would have been a perfect fit...or even Crush.
