Is Tim Burton doing a remake of alice or doing it 100% based to the book?

Well, the fact that we have the Knave of Hearts back in it at all suggests it'll be nominally closer to the book--
Although, with Tim, that's what they first said about that Willy Wonka thing, too.

(Not that I have anything against Disney's Alice, but shame they had to retcon the King of Hearts out of the trial scene...)

Read the original story by Washington Irving and then get back to us on Tim Burton's "faithfulness" to the original story!













In other words, don't count on faithfulness.

Besides, Alice in Wonderland doesn't lend itself to "faithfulness" in film.

Lewis Carroll must have been doing strong "Snuff" the on the days he was writing the Alice books..

He's making up for not getting enough Gene Wilder into Charlie, which <I>was</I> pretty faithful to the book.

Whatever this is, it's going to be <I>Tim Burton's</I> Alice, like it or not.

I like the look, actually...I think the poor photo is pushing the colors and they won't be as garish on film. And when he's dotting about being mad as a hatter, it'll all come together.

I repeat: Half the jokes can be explained. For those who take the trouble to look.
- "Off with their heads", for ex.?...A running and inexplicable preoccupation with Carroll satirizing Elizabeth I (as can also be noted by the "Six impossible things before breakfast" line in "Looking Glass".)
- "The Caucus race"?--Think back to the election, remember what a "caucus" is, put it in Victorian-parliamentary terms, and figure out why it's going in circles.
- The poetry?--Almost every poem (except for Jabberwocky and the trial evidence, etc.) is a strategically silly parody on some real bit of Victorian floweriness that was supposed to reflect proper values. (Off of Alice, Carroll also did a parody of setting up a camera portrait set to Longfellow's "Song of Hiawatha".)

As for Burton's Alice being another excuse to dress Johnny Depp up in frazzled hair, Victorian collar and corpse-goth clown-white makeup?...He's not one of those folks who takes the time and trouble with literary subtleties.
