Rain Man of the Year Without a Santa Claus
Speaking of which, I saw Man of the Year recently....ugh, that movie was AWFUL! :x

SPOILERS!!!!!
It could have been a million times better, but A.) Robin Williams is getting way too old to be playing the "free spirit wild 'n crazy guy who touches people's hearts" or something, y'know, the same thing he did about 400 times before in films like Good Morning, Vietnam, Mrs. Doubtfire, Father's Day, Jack, Jacob the Liar, etc....and
B.) There's also the fact that he's WAY, WAY, WAY older than the gen-X/commentator type person he's presumably supposed to be and C.) The tone veers wildly from comedy Robin shtick to political thriller to some weird emotional drama type thing, complete with drug overdosing and D.) The second half is DEADLY DULL, SCHMALTZY BS complete with a Capra-esque "moral" of how Robin is "heroic" for stepping down as US Prez after he finds out he didn't really win (I guess they're trying to make a point here about a certain real-life Prez, but geez!) Bascially he finds out half way through he's not the prez and is like "Oh, OK, then I'll step down." The rest is romantic comedy Meet Cute water torture. Please--Robin's heroic because he knows he could never really be president and decides to give it up? Um, we're talking about the fate of the free world here! Why not have a real plot about someone like Williams actually rises to the occasion after being accidentally elected president (or whatever he decides to be) because the country really and truly does need him?

Saving Grace: Jeff Goldblum, who's hardly in it, but does quite an impressive (and scary) job as the villain. I can see why they didn't show him in the trailers--his awesome acting next to Robin's embarrassing train wreck of a performance would have made the film's flaws look even worse than they were (quite a feat in itself.)

My G-d, I can't wait to see Goldblum in Adam Resurrected next year!!! :D

I wish someone like Jon Stewart or Steve Carell had played the lead in Man of the Year.

I thought "Man of the year" was great, especially since it was based on truth [though not widely reported, it was proven that there was something fishy about Diebold's voting machines(http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/st ... _be_hacked)]. I kinda like political thrillers, so I didn't have a problem with the sudden shift in tone.

I think the subject of the film was interesting--political fixes/cover-ups--but then why didn't they just make THAT movie instead of (ineptly) directing three different films in one???

Laura Linney is awesome, I feel sorry for her for being in this film.
I loved the scene where she has the drug meltdown, however.

BTW, about Jeff Goldblum, contrary to what anyone might have heard on Ain't It Cool or some other movie blog/column, Adam Resurrected is NOT, repeat NOT a re-make of that awful, unseen Jerry Lewis Film The Day the Clown Cried!! :!: :!: Totally different story, this one is based on a classic book by an Israeli author about the Holocaust (amazing book, too.) which has been translated into like 20 languages. This film has some VERY dark subject matter and will be incredible, I'm 99.999999% sure that Goldblum will be nominated for this film, and maybe even win. (How's that for unexpected? :) )

(And guess who's also in it? Willem Defoe! He's playing the Nazi/villain in the story.)

Since this thread needs resurrecting quite often, I think I'm going to start making my matches simple. It might encourage more folks to join the fun. :)

Oops! Sorry about that, droosan. What can I say? Great minds think alike! :)
