Yeah, plus a few years of Night At The Museums, Pixels, Free Guys and any number of other imaginary stuff come to life stories…

I just recently saw this japanese animated short from 1957 (a mere two years after Harold and the Purple Crayon was originally published!), which is a lovely example of this 'genre'. :)

Well that was just delightful and full of inventiveness. At the end, there’s a link to some other clips, including one for Kitten's Studio from a year later, and in color. Certainly the most "western" anime I’ve seen, but still unmistakably Japanese. Great stuff! :D
