Apart from the Dial being a "real" artefact, I also had issues with Indy interacting with real history, as in disrupting the NYC moon landing parade. All his adventures have occurred while history plays out in the background. Even when he bumped into Hitler he didn’t change the path of events, but we know he wasn’t at that parade and that gunfire didn’t disrupt things. Indy should never affect real events, which is just yet another aspect to this ill-judged outing that didn’t get things right.
That didn't actually bother me in the moment of my first viewing, because
Dr. Voller (Mads Mikkelsen's character) was introduced just before that sequence as being the man who'd "designed the rocket that got (the astronauts) to the moon" .. which would/should refer to Werner Von Braun.

At that moment -- due to both that introduction, and the fact that he didn't appear to be 25+ years older than he'd looked, in the WWII scenes -- I'd assumed that Dr. Voller had already been messing with time, and that he'd somehow gone back and usurped Von Braun's role in the space program. Thus (I assumed), Indy was 'interacting' with an altered timeline.

As the film goes on, of course, we learn that this is not the case. Dr. Voller just had really good genes, I suppose, and still looked to be in his 50s, at age 70+ .. I'm not sure how to explain Voller as NASA's lead rocket scientist instead of Von Braun, though .. and -- as I said earlier -- the Antikythera mechanism is not a 'lost' artifact, in our reality, either. I guess the 'Indiana Jones Cinematic Universe' is a just a slightly different one, from ours. :|

I loved the 'Mod-Squad'-esque CIA agent who was assigned to 'supervise' Dr. Voller. I wish she'd been able to be in more of the movie!

Oh yeah, "Mod Squad" agent was great!

The doc's apparent age threw me, too, not to mention how he'd survived to reach 1969. And the diverting from established history did gnaw at me. But I am comforted thinking that the last two Indy movies are in their own universe/alternate timeline.

The Pitch Meeting above is a perfect encapsulation of the Pile Of Density!

The Flash and Little Mermaid ones that I checked out afterwards are spot on, too. :)

Saying films take place in an alternate timeline is a bit silly, no? That’s just a justification for saying those films did not work and were no good.

I think that was just a humorous defense mechanism to preserve his memories of the original three! Like saying "But I am comforted thinking that the last two Indy movies don't count"!

But I am too!

I’m quite happy acknowledging that two extra films exist in addition to the Indiana Jones Trilogy, but they are not part of the Indiana Jones Trilogy!

Disney apparently released only a 'limited run' of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny CD soundtracks, which has already completely 'sold-out' on its 'Disney Music Emporium' online store; in fact, their entire item listing for the IJ-DoD CD has been removed.

In response to complaints on Twitter, DME helpfully observed that the IJ-DoD soundtrack is still available for 'pre-order' on vinyl LP records (shipping in August).

I mean .. it's a John Williams score .. so, of course it'll be re-printed/reissued on CD, eventually.

but, still .. :| :? :(

I just don’t know what Disney is doing with their soundtracks these days. Not that it was great, but Frozen II never got its deluxe two-disc edition on CD, despite listings for it, Muppets Mayhem remains vinyl only, and many other films have only had digital releases.

Could be that the limited run was a way to contractually fill Williams' usual mandate for a physical release, while not having to keep it in circulation? Kind of like promising Strange Magic got a theatrical release…but not what *kind* of theatrical release!

I see that’s it’s still freely available as a digital album, which apparently is only an hour and seven minutes. Since the film was pretty much wall to wall music, he obviously wrote a lot more for it, so it’s not past the realms of possibilities that Intrada or one of the soundtrack specialists will get around to an expanded CD edition…sometime.

Not that I thought the score was any more successful than the film (lots of old themes, new cues that sounded like old cues, and a general slowness and just drawn out long notes that didn’t have much of the usual Williams melodic touch to them), but if it *does* turn out to be his final score, it’s right that it should have a proper release. He’s well in with the Intrada guys, currently going through his scores in new(er) versions, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not been mooted already.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny bombed because no one wants to see another installment in a series famous for its racism.

Of the many reasons given for the film's underperformance, congratulations:
I'm pretty sure you are the FIRST person on planet Earth to offer that rationalization. :?

(The safer theories went with "Old", "Depressing", and "No Spielberg".)

I was actually very interested in seeing another installment of a series famous for its racism. It just wasn’t a very good movie.

But everyone complains how violent and racist Temple of Doom was. That might've hurt the franchise for good.

The Last Crusade five years later says hi.

(And Temple Of Doom *is the best one*!)
