Plus Dinklage is currently starring in “Cyrano,” playing the title role; I don’t think any mainstream film has ever had a Little Person playing that part. I think that’s AWESOME and a great sign of progress. So I don’t know why Dinklage is acting like Little People are only being relegated to narrow, ultra-stereotypical roles right now.

Dinklage is currently starring in “Cyrano,” playing the title role; I don’t think any mainstream film has ever had a Little Person playing that part. I think that’s AWESOME and a great sign of progress. So I don’t know why Dinklage is acting like Little People are only being relegated to narrow, ultra-stereotypical roles right now.

Except that…in breaking the mold, he’s still playing something of a stereotypical character in Cyrano, a role that is all about a physical disadvantage. Usually it’s a big, fat or funny nose that an actor puts on and is the reason they feel they cannot profess their true feelings to the one they love. In this case, Dinklage doesn’t have to wear a fake nose, but his height becomes that very same reason his Cyrano feels he can’t be honest. So, yes, it’s nice that a little person gets to feature in a starring title role, but it’s not without the caveat of it still being about their height, to which it obviously works in his favor in this instance. So is he taking advantage of that fact to approach this role without having to have a fake nose? Yes. Does it also help that his wife wrote the script? Yes.

So is Dinklage actually any "better" than those that play into their height and use that to their advantage in landing fantasy figure roles when and where they can? No. It’s great that other actors who routinely play on this to get regular work are standing up for themselves and calling him out on it. No, it’s probably not right that little people *can't* routinely go up for leading roles unless the height is a factor in those particular parts — now *that* really would be progress — but to try and make it an issue and actually then start to take work away from those that rely on it while taking advantage from that exact same thing himself, is a pretty poor show on dinky Dinklage's part.

Although, of course, there WAS a real historical Cyrano deBergerac--
But if we can accept his having a big stage nose as artistic license, then I suppose we can accept his being a midget as artistic license, too.

(We didn't see Dinklage complaining about the artistic license taken with hiring a non-midget actor to play Tolouse-Latrec in the goofy Baz Luhrmann "Moulin Rouge".
Or about the director of Disney's live-action "Underdog" insisting that Dinklage's role as Simon Bar-Sinister had to be a midget, since the cartoon character was drawn that way.)
