West Side Spielberg's Story

Post by Ben » November 12th, 2021, 10:55 am

Keep seeing posts about this all over various topics and can’t believe we haven’t got a dedicated thread!

So…

First trailer for West Side Story:

More a TV spot than a first full trailer (though we did get a non-musical teaser before), but I’m still on the fence…

Won’t get too into this as everyone probably already knows how I feel; all I’ll say is I’ve watched this trailer quite a few times. :)

Ha ha. :). But yeah, he looks like he’ll do a solid job.

One thing I hope for this movie is that maybe it’ll be the catalyst for a greater feeling of warmth and togetherness for audiences during these difficult times. :|

RIP Stephen Sondheim. What a terrible thing to happen just before the new movie comes out!

I’m sure he saw it many times already Dace.

But as I just said elsewhere, it is still sad news, even if one can’t complain at reaching 91 and say it is totally unexpected.

Big personal hero to me here; the new movie will be a fitting swing song and, ironically, bring things full circle for his career.

RIP Steve.

So poignant coming so soon after losing Sondheim.

Spielberg’s intro last night paid very apt tribute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abft8Y2Wnk4

Such love and joy in that room. :)

This song was EVERYTHING when I was thirteen. (Hope that doesn’t sound too greedy! :P )

I still hum it from time to time.

One poster (the one we probably won't get, since Fox is going the Sweeney Todd/Into the Heights route in the TV ads of, shh, not telling us it's one of those "weird" movies where people sing in public) DOES rather suggest that Spielberg wants to relive the 60's movies of his childhood--

They still manage to get the 21st-cty. agent-obligated lobby-representation head-collage in, but go ahead and name the 60's roadshow-epics you're flashing back on just from the retro-sketchy artwork:

(I'm seeing Dr. Zhivago and Oliver, any others?)
