Looks like that strategy didn't work either!Bill1978 wrote:For the past few years I've been boring and just picked the winners from each Guild. This year I'm throwing caution to the wind and just gonna vote for my actual favourite (or who I want to win) in each category. It's not like the guilds have ever helped me win, so why not just go with potluck

Picking who I want to win never works out. I knew I had no chance in winning this year. At. All. Haha

Re: Oscar Contest 2019 - 15th Anniversary!
11? Huh. This was one of my worst years ever, score wise.
My original pick for BP was actually Green Book, but then that movie got some negative press for whatever reason (even though, as far as I can tell as someone who hasn't seen it, it looks like a good film), so I went "What the heck? Wakanda forever!"
I did nearly win one year, though, and would've tied for first place if I had simply chosen Best Song differently.
I am glad, for what it's worth, that A Star is Born won for Best Song, something that it truly deserved in my view, but I'm still scratching my head over why First Man won for VFX when Avengers and RPO were both more deserving as far as I'm concerned (Thanos was terrific in Avengers, while RPO had me going "oh my God" out loud during that Shining sequence).
Olivia Colmon easily had the best speech of the evening, as she was simply so delighted to have won despite not being The Favorite to win.

Re: Oscar Contest 2019 - 15th Anniversary!
While the show had few "great" moments, it had enough "good" moments to have made it worth watching, with Gaga and Bradley's song being the standout. Nice to see such diversity in the winners this time. And there were very few "cringy" moments, aside from the worst acceptance speech ever, by the Makeup people. Not having a host seemed to help keep things moving, and this also avoided too many lame moments, or running gags that overstay their welcome (pizza, anyone?).
My usual strategy of not seeing almost any of the films, and reading very few articles about them, seems to be a consistent performer for me. Meaning, I really suck at this. I over-achieved a little this time, managing to tie with James with 9 correct picks (must be a personal best), which kept me from being alone in the basement among the staff!
Congrats to James' wife Tami for truly kicking my butt this time! Obviously, I can no longer rely on her to make myself feel better. I guess James will suffice for keeping me company near the basement.

In the 90's, the joke was "Snow White".Randall wrote:Not having a host seemed to help keep things moving, and this also avoided too many lame moments, or running gags that overstay their welcome (pizza, anyone?).
In the 00's, it was "Dance numbers".
And now, for the 10's onwards, we'll hear the P-word every time people complain about mis-managed Oscar shows.
You can draw generational age-lines by jokes.

Oscar Contest 2020
Animated Views is giving away $50 worth of movies — your choice of either an Amazon gift card or a Fandango gift card — during our 16th Annual Oscar Event! All you have to do is predict who is going to win at the 92nd Annual Academy Awards (to be held on Sunday, February 9th, and televised on ABC). The person with the most correct picks will win!
NOTE: Due to some behind the scenes issues, there is a somewhat major change to the contest this year. While forum registration has always been required to participate (to confirm your email address and to weed out spambots), this year you must also be logged in to the forum when you submit your ballot. It's a small hassle, but the form will now automatically recognize you when you visit the contest page.
Not a forum member? Registration is free and easy so why not sign-up now! You never have to actually use the forum if you don't want to. We never give away or sell any of your information. And other than a message to confirm your address (and another if you win!), we do not send any emails to forum members.
Make your prediction in each category using this form. All entries must be received by Friday, February 7th, at 11:59pm ET. One entry per person please. If you send more than one entry, only the first one received will be counted.
And don't forget to check out our other activities in our Oscar Event:
Best of the 2010s Readers' Choice Poll: In celebration of the end of the decade, we've added a Best of the 2010s Poll where you get to tell us your top ten animated movies released from 2010 through 2019! Each vote you make matters, as they will all help determine which films make it into AV's Top 25 Animated Movies of the 2010s -- as chosen by YOU!
Live Online Chat: Join the AV staff and your forum friends for a live chat during the telecast! We'll talk about the people, the fashions, the story-lines, and the awards. We'll also be keeping track who is winning our contest in real time! Chatters will also get a sneak peak at the winners of the Best of the 2010s Poll.
