I finally received my 'corrected' Superman: The Movie DVD from Warner Bros. this week, and watched it last night.
The opening titles for that film are iconic.
I don't know if it's really possible to appreciate how 'revolutionary' those titles were from todays' perspective, with 'flying' text leaving streaking trails being somewhat 'old hat' by now .. but, prior to 1978, nothing like it had ever been done.
And, while the 'nebula' and 'comet' effects passing through a starfield in S:TM's opening certainly do have a 'dated' look now, I much prefer them to the awful CGI 'ride-film'-inspired mess that was the Superman Returns opening title sequence.

Glad you enjoyed the piece, Vi! I also don't agree with everything Collura wrote in the article. Still, I think he offers some interesting thought nuggets.ShyViolet wrote:Like that IGN article though Josh!
I couldn't agree with you more, droosan! I love the opening titles for that film too.droosan wrote:I finally received my 'corrected' Superman: The Movie DVD from Warner Bros. this week, and watched it last night.

I was glad the Donner cut of SII kept with the 1978 approach and not the Returns "ride film" (good description). As with everything else in SR, it looked old, crap and stolen from something else (in that case Star Trek: TNG).
I remember seeing S:TM in the theater and the screen opening up from 1.33 black and white (on the comic book) so the credits stretching right across the 2.35 frame. And those trails and the whoosh effects. Never before or after has text on screen been so exciting.

I also thought he was great in King Kong, he did a wonderful job there, not many have acknowledged it, but he was great.
Oh and this excerpt is from The Editing Room version of King Kong, soooo funny:

You can’t just have your characters announce how they feel! That makes me feel angry!
