Re: Manga & Anime THREAD
Just got back from boy and the heron. Pretty good but bit of a slow start. Earns it's pg-13 rating. This is more of a teen aimed film over a totoro. Had some easter eggs from past films but does not call them out. Many will miss them.
Animation looks great on the big screen! Worth the $8 amc matinee price for that alone!

Re: Manga & Anime THREAD
Went to the cinema yesterday to watch The Boy and the Heron. First Studio Ghibli film watched in the cinema. Honestly surprised my rural cinema had it in the first weekend of release - in both dub and sub versions. So wanted to see it opening first weekend, to show them there is an audience for these films in rural Australia. I went to the dubbed version, so I could enjoy the art on the big screen (without being distracted by the subtitles) and the art did not disappoint. I think if I knew nothing about the film, the start wouldn't have felt slow as I kept waiting for The Boy to enter the other world, but having said that it did feel like a 2hr movie.
Did I know what was happening at all points of the movie? Not at all, but I still found it very enjoyable. Maybe not top tier Ghibli for me, but definitely not at the bottom of the Ghibli rung either. I described it to a friend as a cross between Spirited Away and Alice In Wonderland with a splash of Narnia with a male protagonist. I just really enjoyed seeing hand drawn animation on the screen. My biggest disappointment with the movie was the score, it just didn't have the usual Hisashi majesty to it.
Was my screening packed? No but the fact that there were 8 adults sitting at the 10.30am session pleasantly surprised me. Wonder if the subbed version got more or less?

Re: Manga & Anime THREAD
Well this is suddenly providing Spidey a run for Best Animated Feature, right? And a great call to traditional hand-drawn animation!
