This should be fun - Google isn't exactly famous for staying well eithin bounds of the law and cooperating with the government and other agencies.

quote:You Tube doesn't make any money.. and they don't own anything that's on their servers.

Not quite. Check out these articles from this summer:

YouTube owns YourStuff
YouTube's new policy says: we own your content.

The second link contains a statement from a YouTube representative, who states:

quote:For clarity, you retain all of your ownership rights in your User Submissions. However, by submitting the User Submissions to YouTube, you hereby grant YouTube a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicenseable and transferable license to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and perform the User Submissions in connection with the YouTube Website and YouTube's (and its successor's) business, including without limitation for promoting and redistributing part or all of the YouTube Website (and derivative works thereof) in any media formats and through any media channels. You also hereby grant each user of the YouTube Website a non-exclusive license to access your User Submissions through the Website, and to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display and perform such User Submissions as permitted through the functionality of the Website and under these Terms of Service. The foregoing license granted by you terminates once you remove or delete a User Submission from the YouTube Website.

So basically, even though your creative ownership is retained no matter what, YouTube legally owns whatever you decide to post on their site (as long as you made it of course) ....soooo:

ALL THE COMPANIES WHOSE STUFF IS ON THERE ARE GOING TO BE PULLING IT DOWN VERY, VERY SOON....

Either that, or threatening the posters with lawsuits and "cease and desist" gag orders, etc...party's over, everyone. We all knew this was going to happen. :( Just like with Napster.

So, I guess the Youtube links on here are history....? :?:

Uh, Violet...
Mickey - just a few posts above! - wrote:As noticed by Cartoon Brew, Terry Teachout from The Wall Street Journal has written an interesting essay on how YouTube is helping fine arts find an audience. Amid Amidi describes the article as "must-read." I agree that it's worth a look.

Is that a reference to the Beatles' song, Ben? You know, the one that ends with "I buried Paul" - er... I mean, "cranberry sauce." ;)
