The Lion Guard

As noted on the front page, Disney will be returning to Pride Rock next year with the newest entry to the Disney Junior block. Disney just a couple hours ago posted the first look at Kion on their blog (Link to Blog).

Interesting...and not actually looking too shabby! So this is essentially a fourth Lion King feature, to be followed by Lion King: The TV Series, to all intents and purposes, and I see nothing wrong with that. It's a good use of taking the characters and bringing something fresh to it, and for younger audiences too (who will now need to catch up with the previous entries, natch!), while looking like it's keeping the hand-drawn look of the original.

TV animation being what it is these days, the show should look pretty good, at least on par with the DTV sequels, and the initial TV movie will no doubt have a healthy budget so that it can roar alongside the best of them. Although the age group will be quite young, I hope the movie at least keeps things a little more mature and interesting for the adults, whereas the series itself can expand on the issues they want to explore with more depth. Sounds pretty cool, actually.

Nice to see a new non-CG cartoon get on the air.

Well...yes, but it's a very well branded "new" non-CG cartoon! ;)

It does seem a shame, though, that traditional animation is now shorthand for either pre-school kids animation or adult comedy "cartoons" (in the proper sense of that word). The middle-ground of good stories being well told in the medium has disappeared...
