...I thought it was about time to start off our official 2010 thread, which will spread up to, and cover, the ABC telecast of the ceremony itself, on Sunday, March 7, 2011.
So...from the 15 titles, only three will make the final cut. Toy Story 3 is a no-brainer, and there's much talk that How To Train Your Dragon will make it into the second slot (I'm not so sure, personally, but DWs does have a lot of support!).
As for the third, we can safely discount a fair number (Alpha And Omega, Kitty Galore, Legend Of The Guardians, Tinker Bell's Fairy Rescue), though this does leave a big selection of studio blockbusters and independents.
On the studio side, Despicable Me got good notices and big box-office, while Megamind is still playing to packed audiences (could DWs gain two places in the race this year, or could Megamind oust Dragon from its so-called sure fire spot, even if Shrek Forever After's chances are slim?), and Tangled has even yet to debut and could surprise all.
On the independent side, The Illusionist has to be the frontrunner if the Academy want to reward an arthouse film. I haven't seen (or even heard of some of) the other films, but they include The Dreams Of Jinsha, Bill Plympton's Idiots And Angels, My Dog Tulip and Summer Wars.
Personally, I think TS3 has it sewn up for a win and a probably Best Picture nomination. DreamWorks could be seen in one spot due to the amount they have released, but I'm not sure Dragon is such a shoo-in. I don't think Shrek has a chance, and, to be fair, I don't think the other independents do either. Megamind could be in there, but it would probably be Dragon's call for DWs, if they get a spot.
Everyone's been waiting for Disney to get back on top again, and maybe Tangled is it. Or maybe the studio shenanigans, director changes, name changes, marketing over artistic choices, etc, could give it a bad rep among voters. So, on top of TS3, who do you think it's down to? Do Dragon, Despicable Me and The Illusionist have what it takes to make spots #2 and #3?
Or is Alpha And Omega the outside winner!?
