Chico & Rita

Post by hcjehg » September 30th, 2010, 9:50 am

Chico & Rita, is an epic, animated love story set within the splendour of Cuban culture, history and music. Beginning in 1948, Chico & Rita tells a tale of passion and creation worthy of a bolero, the Latin America ballad of anguish and heartache.

Old Havana is recreated with masterful fervour; the filmmakers use warm, bright hues to capture the charms and vibrancy of this captivating city. The palette shifts towards a monochromatic tone when the narrative moves to New York, and the result is a striking contrast between differing cultures.

Here is the trailer on youtube

Here is a link to a TV transmission about Chico & Rita. It is in Spanish and very intersting

This film is a visual explosion in colors and design, not to mention the audio side of the film.
The film is scored by none other than Bebo Valdes, who takes up the right side of the screen in the clip below, while his son, Chucho, is on the left.

For those interested in seeing a bit of artwork from the film, we have been granted permission to show some artwork in our "Case story" section.

See the "Global concept" section for Chico & Rita, there is a slide show. Here is the direct link to the page:

I hope you will enjoy the images.

On this page you can also find technical info about how HoBSoft set up this production, but here in short:

We set up the complete infrastructure for automated deliveries (Harmony export, transfers, import AND rendering) from the following studios:

Estudio Mariscal (Main studio, Layouts, Compositing and Direction + others, Spain)
Kecskemét Film (Cleanup, Kecskemét-Hungary)
Lightstar Studios (Animation, Cleanup, Sao Paolo-Brazil)
Animagic (Animation, Cleanup, Madrid-Spain)
Jet Media (Animation and some Cleanup, Riga-Latvia)
Magic Light Pictures (Ink and Paint, Douglas-Isle of Man)
HolyCow Animation (Animation, Cleanup, Ink and Paint, Manilla-Phillipines)
It was drawn on paper and line-tested, hi-res scanned and colored in ToonBoom Harmony.

The project was made with automatic exchange of ToonBoom Harmony projects between the studios, including Color Palettes. Besides that automatic rendering of Harmony scenes in the central studio and automatic update of several Final Cut Pro projects and media files in different studios.

I hope you will enjoy, I will once it comes to my local cinema

Wow, this looks quite amazing!

I've noted the UK date of November 19, but let us know when this comes to DVD or Blu-ray and we'd love to add a review to the main site.

Good luck with the release! :)

I've checked out the UK Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/ChicoAndRita and I'm looking quite forward to this. I think Chico and Rita and The Illusionist have made it a good year for 2D film fans like myself.

Have a look at

http://www.hobsoft.net/cases/chico

for a new film with interviews of production managers around the world that worked on the production of Chico and Rita.

They give their impression of the highly automated production pipeline combination of HoBSoft and ToonBoom Harmony.

Warning: this is promotional interviews, but interesting none the less.

Since you're obviously involved with the film, I have to ask why wasn't this submitted for Academy Award consideration this year? It could have pushed the animated feature nominees up to five.

@estefan

Hi, I don't know, it was possibly not ready at the closing date. This kind of decisions is made by the producing studio and financiers. Let's see what happens :-)

@cocolove

I'll let you know here in the Forum when I hear of the DVD/BD.
