Apparently, with everyone rushing to see it, no one’s yet brought up the subject of whether it’s a GOOD film.
Spoiler: Hell yeah.

Finally went out to see it mid week (I don’t usually go to the mall cineplex anymore, but I wanted to dine out in the area), and yes, for the only other time in almost two decades of Pixar sequels besides Monsters University, they Got It Right.
It’s not only perfectly in tone with the first film, I sat there counting the Bad Pixar mistakes this movie COULD have made, but didn’t:

- Unlike Incredibles 2, we have new characters who aren’t freakishly bugly, and an antagonist who manages to be sympathetic by the last reel,
- Unlike Finding Dory, they don’t botch the central concept of the first film, and keep it in tone while expanding it, without too many shtick-callbacks,
- And the central plot of Riley at hockey camp worried about leaving her besties behind while hero-worshipping the high-school champ manages to depict teen-girl BFF-dom more realistically than certain furry Canadian boy-band fangirls.
The minute we see Riley fixate on her new sports hero (thanks to new emotion Envy), I sank in my seat thinking “Hoo-boy, HERE we go with the studio Representationistas…”, but no: The stress of teen hero worship, and “betraying” lifelong best friends was played for what it was, with no attempt at “subtext”. On the wishful Internet, however, that’s another matter.

My only complaint is that the new director doesn’t quite get the feels of the first film, and there’s no crisis that hits us hard as when Riley ran away from home in the first film—To quote Riley’s stress, “I’m not good enough!”
But we can still like it for what it is.

(Basically,flashing back in the first film made me wish they could get Pete Docter back to do some dream projects, but after “Soul”, that might be a monkey’s-paw wish.)

Flashing back *in* the first film, or *to* the first film? If so, that’s intriguing.

Good to hear it can please even our resident curmudgeon. And I would reckon Docter can still direct whatever he chooses once he’s righted the Pixar ship a bit more. Given this and TS5 we'll get back to moaning that Pixar are just making sequels again, so he’ll eventually come in with another original amongst a few others.

As for Turning Red, I always saw that as intending to be a straight comedy, and Inside Out more of a drama, or a comedy-drama at least, so it’s nice to know they have been able to follow along that path and not turn it into something else. I very much look forward to picking it up when it hits disc.

Some of my favorite Pixar films subvert what I expected to happen by making you think the movie is over but then the character's being forced to make a better choice. Here,

Joy bringing back Riley's beliefs

it the expected resolution. But I got the feels when I realized Joy was going to

remove the beliefs they had spent the entire movie trying to save and allow Riley to build up new beliefs based on all her memories, not just the ones Joy had curated.

I think her

breaking into the coach's office

was maybe a bit more intense than her running away. Maybe not in an actual crisis kind of way, but more of an internal crisis way.
