I saw it yesterday.
It doesn't measure up in the least. Everything interesting in this film was cribbed directly from the original. Krypton, Jor-El, Fortress of Solitude, Romantic Flying, Luthor's Land scheme, even the opening titles didn't have anything new to offer. The new music was unremarkable and exciting only when using the old music. The bizarre copying of the whole Valerie Perrine role in another character's body. What's up with that?
It's like they just lifted everything from the original movie, but did it clumsier.
I'm struggling to think of one, just ONE unique image from this movie. One iconic moment to match the dozens of them in the original. I'm coming up empty.
Where's the moment to match: "You've got me, who's got YOU?!?!"
This movie was so busy quoting lines from the original. I counted at least a dozen. Can anyone quote me one line of dialoge from this film that stands out?
Blech.

I'm still excited about this film....but I'm not expecting anything "spectacular." I know I'll enjoy it though.
Kate Bosworth doesn't really remind of Lois Lane though. She looks kind of skinny and shell-shocked, with that deathly pale complexion and stoned-zombie eyes. She looks very malnourished, like a model on coke. (not saying she's on coke or anything.)
Still, it's got to be better than X3.

Hmmmm....probably setting up for a sequel of course.although the ending was very WTF-worthy.

I have to agree with Sullivan -- SUPERMAN RETURNS feels like watching a 'fan-film,' what with the constant 'line-dropping' and 'homages' to Donner's films.
All the major 'beats' of SR are equivalent to scenes from SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE. And yes, Kitty is a carbon-copy of Miss Tessmacher -- right down to her 'change-of-heart' toward the end. At this rate, if Bryan Singer directs a sequel, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see General Zod in the next one!
That's not to say I 'hated' it, though. It was enjoyable enough, for the most part .. just frustratingly self-conscious in its desire to be SUPERMAN III, rather than its own, new thing.
Although, the 'stalker Superman' scenes were extra-creepy ..

Yep, Droosan, "fan film" nails it.
I keep thinking that if you wanted to make a movie about superman, but the only things you knew about superman was what you learned from the Donner film, THIS is exactly what it would look like.
There's NOTHING in this film that enlarges Superman's cinematic depiction from the donner film. No new backstory, insight, no new anything. New superman suit, that's about it.
Oh, and Donner directed only the first one (although he shot a lot of the second before being replaced.)
Richard Lester is the director of Supermans II & III (he of Hard Day's Night).

Richard Lester is the directorial imposter of Superman II, though he did take credit for III (even though even that ripped off a lot of Donner's cut ideas for The Movie and II - the frozen ice lake, Leaning Tower Of Pizza gag, which was originally slated for Zod and his villains to straighten in II)...

The actress who plays her weighs like 96 pounds or something. Shocked
Doesn't surprise me.
Anyway...I saw it over the weekend. I LOVED IT!
Trust me, Ben, you will NOT be disappointed.
But then that's my opinion...I guess everyone feels differently.

I loved it too. The cast was great and the story was good. And Kevin Spacey was PERFECT as Lex Luthor. And Kitty Pryde is cool, I hope she's in the sequel if they make one. The flying and the action scenes were awesome, but I wish there had been more of them.
Sul: The shot of Superman and Lois Lane gliding over the river was pretty iconic.

Some of the flying shots were perfect, and I mean "perfect." Some looked very CG. It was very solid as far as sticking to the Superman mythos goes and didn't venture to far out from what people are familar with but I think that's what this movie needed to be like. Liked the credits with the blue outlined letters and everything. Great to see Supes back in action.

I'd pick being similar to the original movie over something like Tim Burton's version ANY day.
Here's some concept art for Superman Lives (not sure if it has been posted or not):

Here's something interesting. Turns out that Singer might consider directing Batman vs. Superman: http://tinyurl.com/khqll.
I hope if he someday takes on the job, Chris Nolan is heavily involved in the picture as well.
