Screen Captures of Bambi Restoration
The following seven screen grabs are from the new DVD - they're quite large but show the restoration has been extensive. The film will always have that watercolour texture and blur typical of it's animated genre, but the print is as good as it gets.

Shame you had to compress them so much to upload them - it does take away a bit from having a look at how it will turn out.
Glad to see they've not wiped out the grain completely - Bambi was shot on different stock to the usual Disney features to give it a deeper, darker look in order to get the lower "light level" feel in some scenes.
I hope that's your compression anyway - if that's how the thing's gonna look on DVD, that's a pretty bad job for a film that could just about sit on one layer without any compression at all!

yes, compared to Snow White's restoration job I find it hard to imagine that is the final result of what the movie will end up looking like on dvd. It looks okay, just hard to believe that is the best it can look.Ben wrote:Shame you had to compress them so much to upload them - it does take away a bit from having a look at how it will turn out.

I was going to write an article about the restoration of Bambi on The Disney Database, but I haven't had the time to do it yet. (partly because I only have some text and some images of the restoration). Anyway, here's some restoration comparisons:

I love images like that.
You just know that someone at Disney/Lucasfilm/whoever-wants-to-point-out-what-a-great-job-they're-doing has spent time adding just a little more dirt and grime to those "before" sides!
Does look good though, but the trailer has had all these cleaned up shots on it for a while now, you know.
Just a thought - the top pic (Bambi and Thumper on the ice) looks a little washed out - a little too bright?
And the bottom one - strange that they should switch from having the restored on the right. At least, that's what I am getting from the btoom one - the restored is left in this instance, right?
Interesting to know what color base they are using for this though - I hope they don't go and make Bambi the SAME COLOR all through the movie!

Guess who has "Bambi: Platinum Edition"?
Me!!!!!
I pre-ordered it from Play.com and they sent it to me early yesterday! I know, it was only two days early (England gets Bambi a few weeks earlier than USA for some reason), but yey for me! Although I didn't really watch the movie (which I haven't seen properly in years), I watched one or two of the bonus features such as the Disney Time Capsule (which doesn't have much to do with Disney).
Overall, I think that it will be an average Disney 2 Disc Set, which is not a bad thing, since all the ones that I have seen (such as Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, Alice in Wonderland, Brother Bear, Aladdin and yes, even The Lion King) were all brilliant!

Well, technically, you have the UK Special Edition - not the Platinum!Wonderlicious wrote:Guess who has "Bambi: Platinum Edition"?
I was tempted by this in my local store the other day, but I'm waiting for the proper R1 issue, not least for the proper picture speed and audio pitch.
The extras did sound fluffy to me from early on, especially that pretty sparse first disc, but I'm looking forward to it.

This is somewhat off topic here, but that laughing face looks freaky.GeorgeC wrote:Of course, if you get the R1 release of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, you get an extra 24 seconds in the recent 2-disc release!
PAL/NTSC fans will get the joke...
Anyway, I've watched most of the supplements on the disc and they are all great and just as I expected them to be.
