Six years? More like twenty--I remember when Emmerich & Devlin announced they were going to finish the project, fresh off all the money they were going to make on '98 Godzilla.
Think the only reason we got that JP live-action version was that the rights had reverted.

(The opening line of the article made me think someone was getting too overconfident about riding Power Rangers and Ghost/Shell's pre-release hype, and that...didn't sound likely.)
