The Great Gatsby is being remade and it's starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby. I don't know how this will compare to the original film, but whenever you have Leo in a movie, it makes it appealing. I'm not to thrilled about the director even though he and Leo paired together in Romeo + Juliet which was alright to say the least. All I know is, the original Gatsby movie got abused by the public at first. Somehow, later on, people seem to appreciate it more.

And making Battleship, a film inspired by an 80s game. What's next, Connect Four and Hungry Hungry Hippos?

Why so many in Hollywood want to relive their childhood again and again is beyond me.

Well, instead of lumping that into one Angry Fan basket, let's take it case by case:
- Horror movies like Elm Street are remade because horror fans don't know why or how horror fell into unpleasant niches like home invasion, parent-horror or torture porn, and want to relive the "previous generation's" myth of going to the theater to see a teen-slasher film on Friday night.
- The Smurfs was remade because Warner was hoping to jump their Hanna-Barbera characters onto the Alvin bandwagon, but Sony still had the movie rights dating back to that French movie
- 21 Jump Street was likely a serious project that had been in limbo for at least ten years, and bought out by the Slack Pack looking for a mainstream project, and revived by the Cloudy/Meatballs writers when they wanted a live-action breakout
- Gremlins originally started out as a third movie to cash in on the brief interest in reviving "III-D" triquels for old franchises (which never got farther than MIB3), but sequel interest usually fades into a "reboot" when the project seems too old to bring old characters back or remind audiences of them
- Battleship was going to be the flagship for an entire slew of Hasbro Productions projects to spend their Transformers money on...Unfortunately, they got a little TOO caught up in reminding us they made the Transformers movies.
- And Baz Luhrmann wants to remake Gatsby because he liked the flapper dresses, and he's one of those folks who (wishfully) think Nick and Jay were "gay" because they hung out together. (Try that one on your high school lit teacher.)

So, yes, there's a Why for everything. Fans ask, smart folks answer.
And the reason "Hollywood wants to relive its childhood" is like the horror-film fans: They miss the days when their parents or earlier teen selves could actually GO to the inside of a theater and enjoy themselves, and wonder what mysterious factor is preventing us from doing it anymore. With the 80's, they figure it must've been the movies.

I actually don't see Gatsby as a "remake" per se. It's not like the Robert Redford version is all that remembered these days.

The Smurf movie is not a remake but just another movie using the characters.
The Great Gatsby movie is another movie based on the popular novel and not the remake of a prior movie.
The Gremlins hasn't been green-lighted yet.
21 Jump Street was a movie based remotely on a TV series.
The Last Starfighter sequel is just that, a sequel and hasn't left the pre-production phase since being mentioned in 2008.

Some movies don't stand the test of time well and can stand a revisit with better visuals and updated settings as long as the story is good and worth that revisit.

Also, not sure if this has been posted or not yet but apparently a Godzilla remake is coming out next year. The 1998 film WAS pretty bad.

It's not exactly the kind of source material that would attract Luhrmann for any other reason.

Yep, that's one of your basic Do-Over remakes. We only hear anything about it at the annual Comi-cons (the last two or three, now), but no one can question their motives.

Moulin Rouge is considered gay? Hmm does that mean Les Miserables is considered gay? And how is a movie gay anyway? Cause last time I watched Moulin Rouge it seemed to revolve around a heterosexual love story told through the style of a musical. I would have thought a gay movie would revolve around a main character who is a homosexual.
