The Ultimate Question

Who has made the best movies since 1998 (since this is the year I believe Dreamworks made their first film).

Disney has Mulan, Tarzan, Fantasia 2000, The Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis, Lilo & Stitch, Treasure Planet, Brother Bear, Home on the Range, and this year's Chicken Little.

Dreamworks includes all the animated films they have made throughout this year (excluding Wallace and Gromit).

Direct-to-DVDs do not count and Pixar films are not in the mix.

Well, we had a "best animation studio" type thread that pitted Disney/DreamWorks/Pixar and Blue Sky against each other.

How can anyone compare these two though?

70 years of mainly highs (and what highs they were) at Disney, vs under 10 fairly lacklustre years by DreamWorks.

That's a pretty nuts suggestion!


Howsabout who's made the best films since the Disney bubble burst in 1996? I still think, due to their popularity and variedness, that the Mouse would come out on top. DWs are still too young.

Well, I voted for DW. (big surprise) I think they're only starting to show their potential and will have much more even successes in the years to come.

I'll probably go with Disney on this one. I was disappointed by Treasure Planet and Atlantis, but there have been some nice enough films from Disney in the past seven years, Mulan being the best easily.

However, I feel that the position for the best between Disney and Dreamworks is actually close I do think that some animation enthusiasts do go a bit too hard on Dreamworks sometimes; especially with the Shrek films. I understand that there are a few annoying fart gags in all the films, but the stories are nice enough, as is the animation, even if Princess Fiona looked like she was plucked out of Barbie in the Nutcracker in the first film. I also think that The Prince of Egypt is one of the better "serious" animated films; I have had the DVD for some time and I should get around to watching it soon, as I haven't watched it yet.

I got the DVD yesterday. It's really cool.

Apparently the whole thing with Moses throwing water balloons was inspired by Jeffrey Katzenberg, who used to do that when he was a kid.

Apart from Spirit and Prince of Egypt, i couldn't care less if all existing copies of the other movies suddenly vanished never to be seen again. Dreamworks should rename themselves Nightmareworks.
