Aren't you guys forgetting something?

Post by DarrenBest » January 24th, 2005, 4:01 pm

Aren't you guys forgetting something? :D

You guys haven't factored in the Annies, which are like the Golden Globes for this category. The Best Animated Feature category is voted on only by animation professionals, and if I'm not mistaking, they overlap with the Annie voting body. That would mean that the Annies Best Picture category would predict the animated feature nominees.

This year, the Annies chose:
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence
The Incredibles
Shrek 2
The Spongebob Squarepants Movie

If you recall, The Polar Express was all but shunned by the Annies, which I think is a bad sign for it. No animated film has even been nominated for the Oscar without getting the Annie nomination first, for the exception of Monster's Inc. which wasn't eligible until the following year, when it eventually DID place. I think the Academy will go the way of the high art Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. They've already proven an affinity for anime in the form of Spirited Away, which came from behind with no pre-cursor Oscar support and basically its box-office was non-existent. It eventually won. At least Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence has a cult following among animators to work with. Hmm...Something to think about.

My final predictions:

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence
The Incredibles - WINNER!
Shrek 2

My Predictions

Post by Inkan1969 » January 24th, 2005, 4:46 pm

The Incredibles
Shrek 2
Shark Tale

The third nominee is the only suspense this time around. Aren't the nominees determined by animation professionals? I think there will be too much of a mocap backlash against "Polar Express" for it to be nominated, it'le be "Waking Life" all over again. After PE, "Shark Tale" was the most prominent animated feature. "Home on the Range", "Ghost in the Shell 2" and "SpongeBob Squarepants" are dark horse possibilities. HotR might be there as a token 2D movie. I don't know if members will take "SpongeBob" seriously enough to consider it worth nominating. "GitS2" was a dud at the boxoffice and so I really doubt it'll get the nom.

BTW: "Spirited Away" had the clout of Hayao Miyazaki's name behind, and the push of very rabid fans behind it. Disney rode that wave in then mounting a big ad campaign for the oscar, bigger than what "Lilo and Stitch" and "Treasure Planet" got. So it really wasn't "come from behind."

Though not animated, I'd also predict that Randy Newman is a possible long shot contender for the Song award for Meet the Fockers.
Why does Newman get nominated about every year he has a project out? I mean that as a serious question.

Well, "The Incredibles" is pretty much a lock for Best Animated film. And it might get nominated for Best Film, which it is.

I don't think it'll get a music nomination, because the score was just not very good. But sound editing, sound mixing for sure. Hopefully it'll get a nomination for writing and directing as well!

But since The Incredibles was nominated for Best Production Design by the Art Directors Guild, it stands a damned good chance of getting an Oscar nomination--which would be a first for an animated film. And about damned time.

Beauty and the Beast was nominated for best film. And the Academy will like The Incredibles score because it is very old school sounding.

Welcome back, Ed!

I have to admit that I've only seen one of the nominees for animated short (Lorenzo), but I was surprised to not see Boundin' on the list. I really liked it (although it seemed and odd pairing with The Incredibles). How did the academy overlook that one? Were the other nominees that good?

I can already hear someone saying, "Pixar gets nominated every year. Let someone else have a chance." But Pixar gets nominated every year because they consistently deserve it.

Only one real surprise (somewhat) here: The Incredibles nomination for Best Original Screenplay. I'm very, very pleased to hear that because it seems that the Academy all too often overlooks animated films for this category, as though an animated film does not need a script or screenplay. And let's face it, Brad Bird came up with the most original screenplay of them all (although Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is pretty dang original, too) But Brad's was sooooo much fun to watch!

I hope "Believe" wins in the best song category. It's a beautiful song.

If "The Incredibles" doesn't win best animated feature I'm going to freakin' explode! It is FAR better than Shrek 2 and massively better than
Shark Tale.

I don't know why, but I wasn't impressed by "Boundin". It's the first Pixar film, short or feature length, that I really didn't care for. I was a little too cutesy for my taste. It was visually all that impressive either.

Shouldn't have been a huge surprise to readers of this thread! :)

BTW - Other animated films with Best Screenplay nominations include: Toy Story, Shrek, and Finding Nemo.

There's only one thing I can't stand about the Oscars...the fact that 99% of the nominees opened in December/January. So many films earlier in the year were overlooked. For example, Passion of the Christ should have been nominated (and won) for best foreign language film (yes, I think latin is as foreign as it gets). Also, Little Patch of Heaven deserved Best Song.

Anywho, nothing really surprised me this year (yes, BatB is still the only Best film nominee). I think Shrek 2 is going to win, because if the academy chose Shrek over Monsters Inc, they'll definately choose Shrek 2 over Incredibles. If Shark Tale wins, that'll be a real upset. The only category I'm stuck on is best score since Passion and Potter both had excellent scores.
