Re: The Lego Movie
Regarding your point about Lord Business, my reading of the character was that *big spoilers* Lord Business is named so not for intentional political digs, but because that's how his son, Finn, saw him. The reveal that real life playtime directly influenced the Lego world recontexualizes a lot of el...

Re: Blue Sky's Rio
I actually thought the villains song was the highlight musical number, just because of how it nails the Flight of the Conchords vibe
Especially the "... and malicious"
I wonder if Jemaine Clement helped write the song?

Re:
What a dull movie rango was! I was surprised at how ugly and unappealing the whole cartoon looked. Any hopes of this being a more "adult" or mature cartoon are quickly undermined by how immature and juvenile the "writing" was. The animation is fairy weak, although the textures are quite nice (altho...

Re: Rango
It's not in 3D (!) Some of the grander sequences might have benefitted from 3D, but the 2D image was crisp and colourful:)

Re: Rango
<t>Just got back from seeing Rango. Wow... it's a truly unique animated picture, so much to love!<br/> <br/> A couple of observations:<br/> 1. A lot of refreshingly brave production decisions: ugly, hard to market character designs (all based on actual desert animals!), weird dialogue, off-colour an...

Re: Oscars 2010
Sad to see Tangled omitted, but glad to see the Illusionist! If the spot was taken by Despicable Me I would have been miffed. Inception and Scott Pilgrim both should have been nominated for editing, the former for the incredible time compression, the latter for all those amazing scene transitions:( ...

A new film from Ash Brannon? "Turkeys" sounds interesting. I loved Surf's up!

Re:
The three previous Pratchett animated adaptations have been awful, so hopefully the bigger budget will mean decent visuals. The script could be a painful translation, though, but it'll certainly be something different! Haven't seen Truckers, but I quite liked Wyrd Sisters and Soul Music, especially...

Disney + Pratchett?!
A film version of Mort, having been in development hell for over years before being cancelled, is rumoured to be the next hand-drawn film from Disney after Winnie the Pooh?? http://blueskydisney.blogspot.com/2010/10/animated-progress.html To be directed by Ron Clements/John Musker for a 2013/2014 re...

Re: The Last Airbender
I think what's so annoying about the pronunciation is the fact that the character names had been different for sixty episodes of the show: why change it? It would be like pronouncing Igor in the Young Frankenstein musical "ee-gore" rather than "eye-gore" - more 'correct', but disconcerting for the f...

Re: The Illusionist (Sylvain Chomet)
Saw the The Illusionist at the NZ film festival today... wow. A depressing yet beautifully-made film. Not as bad as Grave of the Fireflies, but still very sad nonetheless, in a really subtle way that makes you sink lower and lower into your seat. The audience were laughing loudly at the little gags ...

Re: How to Train your Dragon
Just saw this in 2D after hearing all the good word-of-mouth. Loved it. Not being a big fan of Shrek 2 or Kung-fu Panda, HTTYD is definitely my favourite Dreamworks CGI film since Antz. A simple story well told with a lot of heart and absolutely beautiful animation! I love the fact that it is in ess...

Re: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
I love the books, and it seems like they're really sticking closely to the comic frames (similar to Sin City and 300), complete with onamatopoeia! Michael Cera may not be the best choice to play Scott Pilgrim, but I trust Edgar Wright and co. will do a fantastic job. Also, apparently the Universal l...
