Re: The Book of Life
They may "mean" them to look like that, but the individual parts are distracting from any character. They're bad. And annie awards are a joke, and always have been. El tigre has the same problem. No amount of busy design will cover up weak storytelling.

Re: The Book of Life
Meh. For a children's cartoon made overseas, I suppose it looks good enough. But they really should hire some designers, as it looks really ugly.

Re: How to Train Your Dragon 2
Looks like the writer/director of lilo and stitch, How to train your dragon, and now Httyd 2 has a hit on his hands. Dean Dublois is the best, by far, director dream works animation has ever had. No one else even comes close.

Re: The Croods
Just got back from a free screening of Dreamworks cartoon the Croods. It's pretty lame all around. Weak story, weaker characters, and all around lack of appeal in the direction design and execution. Very amateurish and stilted in it's dialogue it really tries too hard to be "hip" and "cool," but is ...

Re: Tron: Legacy
The budget for marketing and prints was, in fact, $20 million. In 1982. And according to Disney's annual company report from 1983, they had to write the movie off. It lost money.
Just the facts.
You might, as I do, admire the film. But it wasn't very good, and audiences roundly rejected it.

Re: Tron: Legacy
"No it didn't. On a budget of $17 million dollars, it grossed $33 million in North America alone. That's no where near a flop. It was not a major success, sure, but it was still a success because it nearly earned the double amount of its budget." Plus prints, and advertising, and insurance. That alo...

Re: Tron: Legacy
"because Disney couldn't promote the "computer" angle as well as they could today " No...it flopped because it was a bad movie. I have a nostalgic part of me for the original Tron--but that doesn't make it good. And I saw it at the premiere. But the new film is an unwatchable mish-mash of hackery, a...

Re: Tron: Legacy
The first one was pretty bad. But the world made sense, and the actions of the characters in the Tron world had REAL world consequences.
And the original film flopped. Big time.

The worst film I've seen in 10 years. Easily. It's virtually unwatchable. Thankfully, I didn't have to pay to see it. The script is incomprehensible. The acting makes Sharktopus look like The Godfather. The "design" work is monotonous, unimaginative, and just ugly to look at. There is NO variety. Th...

Re: How to Train your Dragon
I was looking forward to this new Dean Dublois film. Good to see Kris Sandors is working on it too. Funny how Pixar utilized cinematographer Roger Deakins to help the look of Wall-e, and now DW is following suit. I see Deakins' influence more on Wall-e than this film.

There are plenty of rants worse than the ones I've gone on. So no apologies needed there. The Nibbelink thing had nothing to do with money or amount of people. The STORY was the biggest problem--no one cared. Least of all me. The animation was what it was--there's plenty of worse (bluth) and plenty ...

The nibbelink cartoon was a pile of bile, not worth mentioning. Some of the worst storytelling and characterizations ever put on film. And ugly and badly animated. Coppola's "Tetro" is back to form for him. It's not perfect (but neither were any of his films, save "The Conversation"), but he's tryin...

I doubt Coraline will be nominated for a best animated picture award. It's a nice looking film, but the story and characters are VERY lacking (but then again, that didn't stop shrek or that penquin movie!). Up is brilliant. Loved it all 4 times I've seen it. The 3D version is pretty dark, and not th...
